Ok its been forever since I posted. With Marty in town I got a little distracted. We had all sorts of fun, I may post on a few things he did later.

I came across some concept cars and thought they were so neat so I decided to do a whole post on them. It took days to put this together, little by little. My Favorites are the Chevy Camero, Caddy Sixteen, and the Pontiac GTO.

Aurora

Just let Boss out for one last pody break and discover the northern lights have filled the sky. They are rapidly dancing all over the place in greens with a hint of red. First time I've seen them this year. I would have stood there much longer staring up if it wasn't so COLD! Brrrr.

Hurricane Katrina

I've read a ton of stuff on Hurricane Katrina but have had a hard time finding photo's, until now. Thought I'd share them.

I sure feel bad for these people, they deserve all the prayers and help they can get.

Gods Love

I'm reminded of Gods love each time I read these verses. Jeremiah 3:19-21 & Hosea 11:1-11 are just so sad, the way He reveals His broken heart really shows how much He loves us even when we've turned from Him. They're my favorite because the verses really show Him like a parent, only better than any parent could ever dream of being. They show His nurturing, His heartbreak, His loyalty, and His rightousness. Especially in Hosea I see His emotions, it really brings Him out of a book and into my heart reading passages like that. He will always love us, so so much, even when we are so undeserving.

I'm sure there are many more verses showing his love, these are just the ones I know of at the moment.

More Roadside Attractions

This is one of the last roadside attractions I can think of, maybe Marty will remember more.

Something I use to watch for on the slope was a special kind of flare line. From what I observed they had 4 different kinds. The most common flare line is huge. They sit like an Olympic flame a couple stories high, the GC's and flow stations usually have one or two (always lit). I thought they were sorta neat. The second kind of flare were about one story tall and seem to come in clusters of 3. The third kind sat horizontal and usually came in pairs. Marty just may correct me later on all this.

But my most favorite, and rarely seen all lit up are these. You'll have to click on it to see it closer but there are tons of them, all lined up and lit in a row. They always reminded me of birthday candles. The one bigger flame is one of the horizontal kinds sitting a ways a way from the "birthday candles"

This is just a small example of how much extra natural gas they have up there that's just burned off because they have nothing better to do with it. What a waste. I bet what you see right there would heat my house for quite a spell this winter.

Sunday School

I teach Sunday school on Wednesday nights for the 3-4 age group. Tonight in the middle of the lesson about church one of the kids looks at me and asks with such a tone of doom, "Did you know we die?"

Like a deer in the headlights, I so badly wanted to run but all I could do was stare. Heh, of all the people she sees in a day she asks me. I don't have kids and I've never even thought of a four and half year old asking me this question, but (gulp) ok...

I look and there are 4 other little faces (with 4 sets of huge eyes) looking up at me waiting for an answer. The girl who asked is the oldest in class and very ready to be moved to the next age group, she always has something to say and would be ecstatic if I just moved over and let her teach the class. I should add that she has known about death for over a year and her mother told me no one they know has passed away anywhere near recently. The other 4 are younger, not ready for this stuff and by the looks of it, have never even thought about it... till now. Why this came up on my shift is beyond me.

So I say, "well.... yeah, its ok though hun we all die, but it won't happen for many many years" (I hope) I continued by saying "and we go to Heaven to be with God, which is better then here or anywhere you can imagine. In Heaven we will get to be with God, Jesus, and all our loved ones; we will be happier than we've ever been"

She just stares at me for a few seconds, then exploded into tears. All attempted communication with her after that was useless because she was crying so loudly. I felt horrible, then I look over and the 4 other little ones who are stunned, are just staring at her with their mouths hanging open. Lovely. So the assistant teacher takes the little girl who's bawling into her lap, hugging her, and trying to make her feel better while I did my best get the others through it. I will add that they all were laughing and smiling by the end of class, so you don't think too poorly of me.

I usually try to be prepared by over thinking everything, why on earth have I never thought about getting a question like this?

Roadside Attractions

On the slope, or in Prudhoe Bay, there are 2 very large sides of the field with 3 Gathering Centers (or Flow Stations) on each side and tons of drill sites all over. When I worked up on the slope with Marty there were certain things that always caught my attention while commuting about the field. I always told myself I would get pictures of the little things that entertained me up there, but we didn’t get a digital camera until about a year an a half after I quit that job. Now that Marty has the old digital camera up there he has been so sweet as to hunt down things he never noticed and/or never found all that entertaining, just for me. I am just jazzed to get the pictures. They are really nothing much, but that whole place is completely flat, with out a single tree and the wildlife isn’t there to entertain at your beck and call. The stuff to do up there is work, eat, and sleep. They do have a movie theatre, swimming pool (that was broke the whole time I worked up there), gyms, and email access. But after working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week all I wanted to do was go to bed after dinner. So it was the little silly things that kept me entertained. These aren’t the only things, but just a couple to start with. I should add that I told Marty he should post these on his website since they are his pictures at his job, but he isn't as into roadside attractions as I am. haha


This is drill site 1. There is only one other drill site that looks like this one. I use to think it was a great building up there because it looks like a semi. It even has headlights. I can say with almost 100% certainty that it was not built to look like a big rig. From what I learned they would build a drill site and then build additions to the building as more wells were added to the site, this one looks like there are 3 add-ons.


Marty and I lived at a camp on the east side of the field called MCC, this lake is right next to it. Apparently somebody else got tired of the scenery and added his own roadside attraction. This is as close as Marty could get to it but every summer the guy who build it would dig it out of storage and put it in the lake for the rest of us to enjoy. I just found out the guy built it just for the slope. I think he did it for free, although not sure of that. I don't know the guys name (I would love to give him credit) but he just retired and the care of the boat has been passed on to someone else. How nice of him to leave it up there. It sits on the water all summer and constantly shoots 4 jets of water out.


I never actually saw this when I was on the slope. Marty saw it and thought I would get a kick out of it. I don't know what its for but Marty said it moves from drill site to drill site, although it doesn't look very movable. I swear this one had to have been built deliberately to look like a train.

Tornado!

A tornado is seen from Sand Point on Monday in the Aleutian chain, about 600 miles west of Anchorage. Sam Albanese, warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Anchorage, confirmed that the funnel cloud was a tornado after talking to residents and seeing photographs.

Residents of Sand Point witnessed a weather phenomenon that elders say is a first-time occurrence.

They looked across Popof Strait to nearby Unga Island last week and watched a tornado touch two uninhabited mountains.

"You could see the clouds twisting and debris spinning off of it," said Jaclynne Larsen, 30, a teacher at King Cove who returns to her hometown each summer.

Sand Point, population 908, is on Popof Island, one of a dozen or so Shumagin Islands 570 miles southwest of Anchorage near the tip of the Alaska Peninsula and the start of the Aleutian chain.

Larsen was at home with her mother when a friend, Dwain Foster, alerted them to the funnel cloud. He ran up their stairs and told them to grab their cameras.

Sam Albanese, warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Anchorage, confirmed that the funnel cloud was a tornado after talking to residents and seeing photographs. Tornados originate in clouds accompanying severe thunderstorms and touch the ground, unlike water spouts and dust devils, which originate from Earth's surface.

"It's very rare for the Alaska Peninsula," Albanese said.

One reason for the small number of reports of tornados in Alaska is the size of the state and the small population, he said.

"If it has happened, it probably wasn't observed," he said. "We don't really have the means to observe this."

Tornados start in severe thunderstorms, but the National Weather Service's system for detecting lightning strikes does not extend to the area near Sand Point. It's the same story for Weather Service radar, which can alert observers to tornados.

Larsen ran outside with her camera, looked to the southwest and saw the tornado.

"It lifted off one mountain and touched down again on another mountain," she said.

She watched for 15 to 20 minutes.

"It just lifted off of that one and dissipated," she said.

Larsen, 30, had never seen a tornado on the islands. Neither has her mother or grandparents, she said.

Susan Shoemaker, a police department dispatcher and wife of the city's public safety director, was in the parking lot of the Alaska Commercial store when she saw the tornado. She had lived in Kentucky and recognized the funnel cloud.

"We all gawked at it for a while," she said.

Larsen and Shoemaker said the temperature was about 60 degrees and winds were calm. Even more unusual for the island's maritime climate, it was humid and muggy.

Larsen, who teaches first and second grade, will be incorporating the tornado into her science lessons.

"I'm saving the pictures for when we do the weather unit," she said.

"It probably won't happen for another 100 years," Shoemaker said.

I have never heard of a tornado in Alaska. First lightning, now this. 

Ribit

I mowed the lawn yesterday, it was tuff. Just after I started I noticed something leap outa the way so I shut down the mower and hollered at Marty to come see. Just a baby tree frog, very small as you can see. He fit on the tip of Marty's finger. So we set him down in a safe place and I started mowing again only to find there are little tree frogs everywhere. I kept having to shut the mower down and bring them over to the already mowed part of the lawn. Bossco was just itchin to find them on his own, fortunately for the frogs their so small and blend in so well he didn't have a chance.

Thursday Night Entertainment on the Farm

I went out to the chicken coop last night to get the eggs and saw a ton of shrews out there. They weren't even trying to hide from me. The chickens eat a small portion of their food and the shrews are eating everything else. There are now cities of shrews that live around/in the chicken coop. I'm thinking I don't have a cat for no reason, just what is he doing in all that spare time of his?? I went and brought him in, once he saw all the little critters he was all over it - it was entertaining. I was just in there for a few minutes watching the cat and Bossco was just crying the whole time, so I let him in and made him sit. He really wanted to help kitty but he's to big and slow. I couldn't believe it but he sat in the same place for about a half hour, only thing that moved was his head. If only you could have seen it.

At the Lake

Ok Ok, I know I emailed some of you pictures of the same thing last summer but I went to the lake tonight to let boss go swimming for a bit and saw the snowmachiner again. I don't know if its the same guy or different from the guy I took pictures of last summer but I do know its a different snowmachine. I promised somebody I'd post it.
For the rest of you who haven't seen this....
Even though jet ski's are the preferred method, you can use a snowmachine to go out on the water. As long as you don't stop it will go everywhere a jetski will. The two snowmachines I've seen, both had buoy's tied to them - that way if it stalls and sinks there's a buoy floating on the surface so they can find it again. The guy last summer said all you have to do is drain all the water out if does sink and its good to go. I was so shocked when I saw this for the first time last summer, it still blows me away.

Bliss in the back of a Chevy

Happiness is getting to ride in the back of the truck, adjusting his jaw to make all sorts of air-pockets out of his flapping lips. Just looking at how happy he is makes me want to go for a ride.

Yes I know I should be driving but one can never have enough pictures of him.

No Shy Butterfly

Let me get right in his face for a picture. In fact, I think he's even smiling for the camera. :)

While we were in Indianapolis my aunt took a few of us out shopping, and of course we can't skip going to a green house. I got some super neat stuff there too. But while we were there she insisted we go into the depths of plants to see something. Low and behold a mother bird chose one peticular plant, set up house, and had some babies. The folks at the greenhouse have taken the birds under their wings and make sure nobody messes with them.

I've never seen wild birds so little and young before.

Home

I made it home on Sunday. The trip down was wonderful and being with the family has renewed me. My time with each one of them will never ever be enough and I miss them all terribly.

On the other hand, it felt so good to get home, see my husband, see my dog, and sleep in my bed.

Go'in for a ride

To lazy to stand up and put his head out the window. Laying down and stretching to rest his head on the door seems to be much better.

Ticks

Mom and I are staying at one of my aunt and uncles (her sister) down here in Indiana. These two have computers everywhere so here I am feeding my blog addiction.

We went way out into the country yesterday to an old cemetery that hasn't had any new graves in I think decades and decades. There are some grave stones but many grave markers are just plain rocks, no engraving, just river rocks - some of the markers were tree's, no carving, just a tree. Odd not knowing who's buried there. Apparently that's how it was done way way back in the day. My great great grandparents and a few other people are buried there, and then there were some places nearby we use to visit down the road. Anyway we got out of the car at the graveyard for I think all of 2-3 minutes tops. We were headed back to the car and mom starts hollerin about a bug on her leg. She tried to brush it off and it wouldn't come off, which means panic. My uncle had to come and pick it off, and told us it was a tick. Now I'm starting to panic. This is the critter I have taken great pains to avoid. I haven't had one on me in 18 years I think (great bonus living in Alaska). So after the one was discovered on mom we all bent over to check our legs and sure enough we all had them. I had 3-4 on me and another one showed up on my ankle 30 minutes after I had checked that very same spot. It was just yuck. None of them had time to bury their heads but they still stuck, we had to squish them to our skin or pick them off. Neither choice is good in my book. I had to check places I rather not be checking and then mom and I had to go through eachothers scalps. We wore hats, thankfully none got in our hair. I iched all day until I was finally able to twitch into the shower. That shower felt so good, I swear I'll never enter the Indiana sticks again.

My cousins family and I are going to the Newburgh fair tonight while mom and auntie are going to the class reunion. Should be fun.

TTFN

I fly out at 11pm tonight. I started packing last night and I swear I feel like I'm missing a ton of stuff. If only I knew what I'm forgeting. I guess if I don't figure it out soon, I'll just have to live without.

Valette and her hubby stayed here last night on their way through town. While I'm not sure I'll ever see my cat again, their dog was complete entertainment. I didn't think any dog could fit under my bed, (the cat didn't either) but almost immediatly after entering my bedroom Lacy shot under the bed and straight into the cats face. haha it was way funny. If Valette wasn't allergic to cats I'd get Lacy one for christmas. She totally needs one.

I was gonna post my favorite picture of Lacy, (I think it was 2/7/04 - Lacy 7) but I couldn't find it anywhere. Valette I really liked that picture, where did it go?

Anyway I gotta git, be back on the 19th.

Hail

About a week and a half ago in the middle of a beautiful spring day we had a flash hail storm. This picture was taken no longer than 20-30 seconds after the hail started. The hail only came down for about 10 - 15 minutes but it covered everything and was about the size of a pencil eraser at its smallest. At this point although hard to see, it had covered the tops of all the vehicles and was gathering fast around the yard. I took 2 shots and was just about to move in closer when my camera batteries died. Very odd time for hail considering we never had any this winter.

Starting Over

After getting it back and plugged in I started the looong process of trying to get back to something that resembled the old. Before I could start anything else I had to go to my display settings and make it look sorta like it did before, but the desktop picture I had is gone so it still doesn't look right.

Called the internet company and got the settings to get online and check email.

Set Outlook Express up with my 2 email addresses again, checked email, added a few addresses back into my address book.

Downloaded all three messenger programs.

Went to find everyone's blogs including mine and it hit me I was in Internet Explorer and not Firefox - yikes! (I am now addicted to firefox and could never go back to Internet Explorer, many thanks to my super smart sister-in-law for setting me straight there).

Find my blog and all the others, read and bookmarked.

Install Printer Software.

Found TV Guide, signed in & bookmarked.

Found Alaska Newspapers & bookmarked.

Found Indiana Newspapers & bookmarked.

Found car insurance website & bookmarked.

Found Banking website & bookmarked.

*Remember I needed to re-install Norton System Works (to go with the 4 spyware and one other virus protection programs the tech installed on the new hard-drive)*

Tear my house apart looking for Norton 2004. After 30 minutes of searching I find 2003 in the crawl space, I swear I gave that away last summer - strange. After an hour and a half of searching, I find Family Tree Software and Quicken, ug. Still can't find Norton 2004.

Install the dreaded Quicken.

Spend until 2:30 am (3½ hours) loading checking account, mortgage,loans, creditcard, & bills into Quicken while pulling my hair out, and I haven't even reconciled yet.

Go to bed.

Today...

Find my Microsoft Works & Money 2000 disk - hiss, boo, and wish I had Microsoft Office - Which I had before but technically shouldn't have (having to go back to Microsoft Works Word Processor after having Microsoft Word makes me cringe).

Install Microsoft Works & Money 2000.

Go in search of Norton again and find Microsoft office 2000, HOOORRAAAAYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!

Install Microsoft Office 2000 and have MS Word once again. All is right in my world of word processing again.

Install Win-Zip

Find Norton 2004 in the same cabinet I've looked in over 50 times since last night, durf.

*Still need to install adobe photoshop elements but, when I borrowed it from dad I left the cd in his computer and took the case. Grr - Will have to wait till I go in on Thursday now to get it.

Installed Norton Go Back - This is an added feature of System Works but has to be installed separately, so I never did it when I bought and installed Norton the first time. It could have saved me a ton of trouble. Grrr

Well I got my computer back. The tech was not able to recover one single thing off my old hard-drive, so here I sit in front of a stranger. My old faithful friend which I worked so hard to build and mold to fit me is gone, a blank PC given to replace it. Stupid doesn't begin to describe how I feel. I knew I should have been backing up my computer but it was more something like a nagging thought I just blew off, now it is like a fog horn blowing in my head... YOU IDIOT!!!!

Just some recent things I was using, that I can remember losing...
* Everything in Quicken - will have to start all over
* around 750-800 pictures
* over 1000 names and personal info in my family tree (will have to completely start over here too)
* All email and mailing addresses along with birthdays and anniversary's
* All my digital art it took me so long to make
* Bookmarks
* A TON of programs collected here and there
* Around 500 songs
* A large handful of resumes I kept for others, including mine (Thankfully I have a few printed copies)
* Recipe's
* A ton of bible study material I worked so hard to collect

Each day since it happened I remember one more thing I lost. Then comes the sinking feeling in my heart. Then the thought of how stupid I was.
